tell us about your story and the city you live in

We are two italian film makers who live and work in Bologna. Over the many years our job's goal has always been to describe and show the stories of people and places around the world.
We are currently planning trips to various "megacities" (Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Cairo, Tokyo, Shenzhen, Karachi) - a new opportunity to have the chance to meet women and men who are willing to show and share with us their own stories and present their own city to those who have never been here. Thanks a million in advance to every single person who will answer to this message.

I don't live in São Paulo anymore, but I know it very well. I would say that São Paulo combines heaven and hell.

I used to live in São Paulo when I was a child, in the 60's. I remember that me and my mother, almost every evening, we used to walk by São Paulo's downtown to see the department stores, to shop and eat in the restaurants. The city was so alive and busy, there was so many well dressed, beautiful people walking by downtown. The shops were always open. I went to London last year and it reminded me my childhood in São Paulo.

However, some years ago, I went to São Paulo and, by the evening, I decided to walk by downtown, to remember my childhood. That was so scaring. São Paulo's downtown today is so dirty, dark and full of homeless people and thieves. All stores were closed. That walk was like the movie "Back To The Future".

Nowadays, São Paulo is so full of grafittis, the building are grey (people don't paint anymore). Almost everyday there is a strog rain and the flood take the streets. The traffic is terrible, that's a complete chaos. The city is surrounded by violent and dangeous shanty towns.

At the same time, if you go to the shopping malls, to the nice neighborhood called "Jardins", you will find excelent restaurants, expensive fashion stores, beautiful people and nice cars. That is the heaven beside the hell. You can enjoy São Paulo very much if you know the good places to go.

Anyway, rich people today is living far away from downtown, in closed neighborhoods, protected by private police.

Hi,

I applaud your film and your studies--I hope when you visit Los Angeles (where I live) you will not only document the garmet district and various cultural neighborhoods, but also the wealthier outlying neighborhoods. I say this because there are interesting pockets of urban crime and poverty in these presumably "nice" suburban neighborhoods surrounding Los Angeles. And some of those neighborhoods preclude certain kinds of people from entering them.

Please see the post on my blog entitled "Economic Profiling"-- you might be surprised. I am well-educated and have a nice job but I choose to drive a fairly dumpy car and live in a very crime-ridden, poor pocket of an otherwise wealthy surburban neighborhood. When people hear about what happens on the streets around me and where I live they are quite surprised. Los Angeles presents many dichotomies--all of which I hope you will explore. Please contact me for further information or assistance.

Warmest regards,

Leisel Bogan
